Scientists haven’t been able to come up with a model that properly balances energy supply, energy consumption, and production costs.
Costs depend on direct sunlight, so they can’t work if it’s cloudy or dark. These cars usually have a battery that stores energy, but still, they can’t run for long. Besides, in order to run longer, they should consume less energy, so they should be very light, and a battery is usually heavy. You can’t just solve this problem by plugging in a huge battery because the car would need even more energy to carry all that weight. On top of that, the special, light materials used to make these cars and the solar panels themselves are very expensive. This wouldn’t be a car that is on the reach of anyone’s pocket.
By now, the only solar-powered car that has worked is a golf cart. These vehicles don’t spend much energy because they run for short distances -from one hole to another- and carry few people inside; so, the little energy that they gather from sunlight is enough for them to work.
Solar-powered cars are a great possibility for eco-friendly vehicles, but for now, they are not practical. Perhaps in the future, new systems and materials will ve invented, and these vehicles will be a reality. For now, they are just prototypes.
